Summary

Maus is the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son, a cartoonist who tries to come to terms with his father, his father's terrifying story, and History itself。 Its form, the cartoon, succeeds perfectly in shocking us out of any lingering sense of familiarity with the events described, approaching, as it does, the unspeakable through the diminutive。 It is, as the New York Times Book Review has commented, "a remarkable feat of documentary detail and novelistic vividness。。。an unfolding literary event。"

Moving back and forth from Poland to Rego Park, New York, Maus tells two powerful stories: the first is Spiegelman's father's account of how he and his wife survived Hitler's Europe, a harrowing tale filled with countless brushes with death, improbable escapes, and the terror of confinement and betrayal。 The second is the author's tortured relationship with his aging father as they try to lead a normal life of minor arguments and passing visits against a backdrop of history too large to pacify。 At all levels, this is the ultimate survivor's tale - and that, too, of the children who somehow survive even the survivors。

Part I of Maus takes Spiegelman's parents to the gates of Auschwitz and him to the edge of despair。 Put aside all your preconceptions。 These cats and mice are not Tom and Jerry, but something quite different。 This is a new kind of literature。

I have never read a graphic novel before (unless we count the comics I read as a kid)。 I thought it was so well done。 My only objection was the size of the print was hard for me to read at times。 I have part 2 on my nightstand and will be reading that soon。

The inclusion of the before and after really helps drive home this real event and how real the people affected were and are, and how things are still affected now。 I admit I only knew of this book due to the banning, but it’s important to read books like these。

Everyone should read this and Maus 2。 Even if you think you've read books about the Holocaust before, the is a great experience。 Everyone should read this and Maus 2。 Even if you think you've read books about the Holocaust before, the is a great experience。 。。。more

Touching, poignant。 I thought that I had heard so many stories about Jews in Poland in 30。 and 40。 of the XX century, about their torment and unimaginable suffering, that something that looked like a simple comic with animals would not move me。 I was wrong。Initially, I was not fully gripped。 But at some point, Valdek's story and how it changed him showed me how brilliantly Art Spiegelman told it。 And this mix of sad, terrible stories, with the black-and-white comic, was just。。。 no wonder it won Touching, poignant。 I thought that I had heard so many stories about Jews in Poland in 30。 and 40。 of the XX century, about their torment and unimaginable suffering, that something that looked like a simple comic with animals would not move me。 I was wrong。Initially, I was not fully gripped。 But at some point, Valdek's story and how it changed him showed me how brilliantly Art Spiegelman told it。 And this mix of sad, terrible stories, with the black-and-white comic, was just。。。 no wonder it won prizes。 。。。more

Requested this book from the library as soon as unheard it was removed from McMinn county school curriculum。 Not sure why this was removed。 It was not overly graphic for middle schoolers。 I would have no problem with my son reading it。 The story line is clear and easy to follow。 The illustrations are creative and add to the storyline。 Overall, it is an accurate read of the Spiegelman family’s experiences in WWII。

Usually, I am not interested in graphic novels, but the hoo haw concerning Maus caught my attention。 Crackpots are working overtime to cause public school dissention, and doing an admirable job, by the way。 Maus has become a tool from the toolbox of bigots。 The Indiana legislation is attempting to or has passed bills to prevent studies which might offend children… and their parents。 Our Hoosier Attorney General has written a parents’ bill of rights on company time and with taxpayers’ money。 My Usually, I am not interested in graphic novels, but the hoo haw concerning Maus caught my attention。 Crackpots are working overtime to cause public school dissention, and doing an admirable job, by the way。 Maus has become a tool from the toolbox of bigots。 The Indiana legislation is attempting to or has passed bills to prevent studies which might offend children… and their parents。 Our Hoosier Attorney General has written a parents’ bill of rights on company time and with taxpayers’ money。 My local school would be afraid to purchase this book and our local public library has not a copy。 A Tennessee schoolboard objected to bad language (Their children do not apparently watch television。) and mouse nudity apparently referring to the suicide on page 100, but no one objected to the child murder, or hanging on page 83, and must have missed the bathtub on page 149。 (The subsequent title has naked men mice being driven through the snow。) Actually, I believe, and I have no data to back this up, that the objectors have no use for Jews, and I further suspect many of them even deny the holocaust。 One Indiana legislator did not think we should be critical of the Nazis! Indiana was the hub of the KKK in the twenties (SEE: Citizen Klansmen by Moore。) and the concept did not really fade away。 Their targets at that time were foreigners, Catholics, and, of course, Jews。 Hatred runs deep and does not appear to disappear。 Now the KKK wears Men’s Warehouse suits in the chambers and jeans on the campaign trail。 Security occasionally hassles elected black officials entering the statehouse。 Really, the artwork is above average and the plot- which I take to be primarily true- is compelling。 It would not hurt our youth to read the works of Art Spiegelman。 The series will not change the world, but it might spark intelligent discussion。 Recommended。 。。。more

Maus I, is riveting! It pulls you in and doesn't let go。 Definitely, a vivid portraital of what many went through during the Holocaust。 Easy to digest while also making you feel what this family went through。 Maus I, is riveting! 4。5 stars - such a unique presentation, but I felt like it was more of a memoir of the author learning his father's story rather than the father's story itself。 4。5 stars - such a unique presentation, but I felt like it was more of a memoir of the author learning his father's story rather than the father's story itself。 。。。more

An amazing novel。 I wish I had gotten the Metamouse set for my classroom and not split up the two。 It is filled with raw emotion and clearly shows the relationship between the author and his father as well as clearly delivers the father's story。 An amazing novel。 I wish I had gotten the Metamouse set for my classroom and not split up the two。 It is filled with raw emotion and clearly shows the relationship between the author and his father as well as clearly delivers the father's story。 。。。more

There is no reason why this book should be banned。 This and Night are essential reading for all ages。 We can not forget the atrocities of the past and shame on the state of Tennessee for banning it。

Two reasons I really wanted to read this book- 1。 It's on the banned book list。 We need to read all of these。 2。 It's about the holocaust, which I'm obsessed with。 It's a graphic novel, which I'm normally not into at all。 A sad, depressing story, of course。 Said to be one of the best books about the holocaust。 Not quite sure I agree with that, but I'd love to read the next part。 Two reasons I really wanted to read this book- 1。 It's on the banned book list。 We need to read all of these。 2。 It's about the holocaust, which I'm obsessed with。 It's a graphic novel, which I'm normally not into at all。 A sad, depressing story, of course。 Said to be one of the best books about the holocaust。 Not quite sure I agree with that, but I'd love to read the next part。 。。。more

What can I say。。。 Read it。 Please, read it! And then re-read it。 We must not forget。

Not my genre of reading, but the controversy surrounding it is absurd。 This is a definitive look into the Holocaust from a different perspective, and that should not be lost because someone, somewhere tries to get it banned for content that was no worse than PG-13。

Banned book in McMinn county。 Why?!!Natalie wrote her op ed for the Tennessean。

This is a graphic novel which has shown up on banned book lists。 It deals with the holocaust。 The Jews are mice and the Nazis are cats。 I'm not exactly sure why it was banned。 I will admit that the holocaust is a "heavy" topic and I'm not sure that I'd want elementary school kids reading about it on their own。 However, this book was classified in the adult section of my library。 This is a graphic novel which has shown up on banned book lists。 It deals with the holocaust。 The Jews are mice and the Nazis are cats。 I'm not exactly sure why it was banned。 I will admit that the holocaust is a "heavy" topic and I'm not sure that I'd want elementary school kids reading about it on their own。 However, this book was classified in the adult section of my library。 。。。more

It’s been quite some time since I read this, and while looking at the rising number of holds due to this being “banned”, I figured I’d put my name on the list again。 I don’t think I could word it any better than as Mala says in the story, “It’s an important book。 People who don’t usually read such stories will be interested。”

Ian Hefele

Read this everyone!

Very good book。 Interesting format。 Comic book format。 Not sure at all why this book is banned。 A novel approach to the holocaust, absolutely should be read by upper elementary upwards。

This was incredibly moving, I had to read excerpts of this when I was 12 and I liked them。 I’m so glad I got around to reading the whole thing, I don’t normally read books or graphic novels about the holocaust, but this was very informative and a really interesting read。 Everyone needs to read this。 It’s so important

I felt more destroyed now than when I read the first time, over 20 years ago。 The author manages to show the pain of all the main characters。 The war stories are hard but remain realistic because they are better balanced than in a movie like The pianist for instance。Maus is an unforgettable experience。

Corinne

Excellent。 An incredibly told history。

I thought that this book was phenomenal。 It goes in depth to discuss the early stages of the Holocaust and the difficult journey that the artist's/author's father induced。 My favorite aspect of the book is how it inadvertently discusses the after-effects of holocaust。 I often feel that books are lacking in this area (not that that's a bad thing) and it's something that I don't see too often。 My favorite part of the book was definitely when he shows the comic-book that he created when he was youn I thought that this book was phenomenal。 It goes in depth to discuss the early stages of the Holocaust and the difficult journey that the artist's/author's father induced。 My favorite aspect of the book is how it inadvertently discusses the after-effects of holocaust。 I often feel that books are lacking in this area (not that that's a bad thing) and it's something that I don't see too often。 My favorite part of the book was definitely when he shows the comic-book that he created when he was younger that discussed his mother's death。 I think that this addition to the novel was genius because it shows how the Holocaust affected his mother which leads the reader to presume that this 。 It truly does invoke a lot of emotion due to the drastic stylistic change。 It is a truly thought invoking and emotional graphic novel that nearly brought me to tears。 。。。more
